How solar cameras work

The integrated solar panel converts sunlight into electricity that charges the built-in battery. The camera runs on battery power at all times — the panel just keeps it topped up. On sunny days, the battery stays fully charged. On cloudy days, it draws from the stored reserve.

Continuous 24/7 recording consumes far more energy than the panel can generate. Solar cameras work best in motion detection mode — they activate when they detect movement and return to sleep mode after. This is how they achieve long autonomy.

Most solar cameras need 4–6 hours of direct sunlight to maintain a full charge in normal use (motion detection mode). In winter or cloudy regions, this can drop significantly. If you have fewer than 4 hours of direct sun, consider a larger external panel or a model with a bigger battery.
Technically yes, but glass blocks a significant portion of UV rays that solar panels need. You'd get maybe 20–30% of the efficiency of outdoor installation. For indoor use, a camera with a rechargeable USB battery is more practical.
