When WiFi cameras make sense

A WiFi camera is the default choice for most home users. It connects to your existing router, records locally to a microSD card (no mandatory monthly fee) and provides high-quality video.

โœ…
WiFi camera is right if...

You have good WiFi signal at the installation point. The camera is within 15โ€“20 metres of the router (or you can use a WiFi extender). You want to avoid monthly SIM costs. You want the best possible image quality.

โŒ
WiFi camera is wrong if...

There's no internet at the installation location (farm, rural property). The signal doesn't reach (more than 30m from router without extender). You need it to work even when your broadband goes down.

Frequently asked questions

No. All WiFi cameras record locally to a microSD card for free. Cloud storage subscriptions are optional extras โ€” usually โ‚ฌ3โ€“10/month โ€” that add remote backup and smart features. You can use the camera perfectly well without paying anything monthly.
In practice, 10โ€“20 metres through walls and floors. In open air, up to 50 metres. Thick walls, microwaves and neighbouring networks all degrade the signal. If you're more than 20m away through walls, consider a WiFi extender or mesh system.
