GPS for cats: different from dogs

Cats present unique challenges for tracking: they're smaller (the device can't weigh more than 10% of their body weight), they wear breakaway collars, and their movements are stealthier and more unpredictable than dogs.

The 10% rule

The accessory a cat wears should not exceed 10% of their body weight. For a 30g GPS, the cat must weigh at least 300g. For real use, look for 25–35g GPS for cats over 3 kg.

From approximately 6 months, when the cat has reached a stable size. Before that, they can grow and the collar may stop fitting correctly. Always verify the device doesn't exceed 10% of the cat's weight.
Cats should wear breakaway collars for safety β€” they release if the collar gets caught. This means the GPS can fall off. Some manufacturers offer a secondary safety strap. Make sure the fit is comfortable but secure.
