Tractive DOG 6 in depth
What it does well
- The longest declared battery of the two, though the headline figure depends on using a power-saving zone around the home.
- Escape alerts with light and sound. Useful for the specific problem most owners are actually trying to solve.
- Activity and health trends, which turn the tracker into something you look at even on the days your dog never leaves the garden.
- The broader ecosystem. More models, more accessories and a larger user base to draw on when something goes wrong.
Where it falls short
- No voice features. If calling your dog through the collar is what you want, this is not the one.
- The declared battery drops sharply without a power-saving zone configured — from up to 14 days to up to 6.
- The subscription is unavoidable, and the monthly rate only becomes reasonable on the longer commitments.
Pawfit 3 in depth
What it does well
- Pawfit Voice. The genuinely distinctive feature: you can speak to your dog through the collar.
- Audio ID, for identifying your dog by sound.
- Removal and temperature alerts. The removal alert matters if theft is your concern rather than escape; the temperature alert matters in a hot climate.
- Immersion rated to 3 m as declared by Pawfit, above a plain IP68 claim.
Where it falls short
- Shorter declared battery — up to 8 days against Tractive's up to 14.
- A smaller ecosystem and fewer third-party accessories.
- The voice features are the whole argument. If you are not going to use them, you are paying for something you will not touch.
What about the Pawfit Lite?
Pawfit sells more than one tracker, and the cheaper models in the range are a common source of confusion when comparing against Tractive. They are not the same product: the lower-priced units drop features rather than simply costing less, and which features they drop changes between revisions.
Before choosing on price alone, check Pawfit's own current model comparison and confirm that the specific feature you are buying the brand for — voice, removal alerts, temperature — is present on the model you are about to order. That is the mistake worth avoiding here.
Compare the total cost, not the device price
The price of the tracker is only the first payment. Add the subscription for the term you actually intend to commit to, and the ranking between these two can invert depending on whether you pay monthly or sign up for two years.
Check the current cancellation and refund conditions at the same time. On both brands, the cheap headline monthly rate is the one billed up front for a long period — the genuinely monthly option costs substantially more per month.
Coverage decides this before anything else
If you are going to use the tracker in open countryside, check coverage before you compare features. Neither device can send you a position while it has no compatible network, and this is not something a better plan or a different brand fixes.
The practical test costs nothing: take your phone to the places that worry you — the far corner of the land, the valley on your usual walk — and see what signal you get. That result tells you more about whether either of these will work for you than any specification in the table above.
Does either tracker work without a subscription?
No. Both the Tractive DOG 6 and the Pawfit 3 require an active plan, because the position is sent over a mobile network and that network has to be paid for.
If a no-fee tracker is what you are after, the product category you want is a radio-based handheld system such as the Garmin Alpha range — a much larger up-front cost with nothing to pay monthly.
What happens where there is no mobile coverage?
Nothing useful. Neither device can send you a position while it has no compatible network, and no plan changes that. This is the single most important thing to check before buying either one.
If the walks that worry you happen in a valley, a forest or open countryside with patchy signal, check coverage on your own phone at that exact spot first.
Is the declared battery life realistic?
Treat both figures as manufacturer maximums under favourable conditions, not as everyday results. Tractive's longer figure depends on using its power-saving zone; without it the declared figure drops considerably.
In practice, how often the tracker reports its position is what drains the battery. A dog that spends most of the day inside a defined safe zone will get far closer to the declared maximum than one tracked live on long walks.
Can I use the Tractive DOG 6 on a cat?
It is not the right model. The DOG 6 is specified for dogs from around 4 kg, and both the weight and the collar format matter for an animal that climbs and squeezes through gaps.
Tractive's CAT 6 Mini is the model designed for that, with a cat-specific collar.
